SetiGate is a Windows-based program to cache and distribute Seti@home work units. This means that you can hold many work units offline, let Seti@Home work on them, and then go online to deliver the work done and get some more. Ideal for people that don't have cable or other always-on connection.
Some of SetiGate key features include:
- Multiple user and processor support.
- Exporting work units and results to and from non-networked computers.
- Keep track of your own progress, that of your friends and your group.

Setup SetiGate for GUI Seti@Home (the screen-saver)
SetiGate comes with a very nice documentation for setting up the system with a special Seti@Home, the Command Line Interface one, that most of the people don't know how to work with... (lets be honest, its true, DOS is scary for many people).
If you have the "normal" Seti@Home program and want to use SetiGate, just read this next tutorial.
First there are some things you need to do:
- You must have Seti@Home installed
- You must have a valid account with Seti@Home
- You must install the latest version of SetiGate (the link is above)
Now follow this five simple steps:
(1) SetiGate Options
- OPEN SetiGate
- CLICK on the top menu FILE > OPTIONS...
- On the OPTIONS window, CHANGE the options like the image below:
What you CAN change:
- The "Max. WU conn." is the number of simultaneous download of work units. If you have a VERY SLOW internet connection, stay with the number 1 but if your connection isn't all that slow, you can try 2 to 5... If you have a very fast connection, use 5 to 10 or more.
- You should also turn on the "Start in tray" mode if you want SetiGate to always start minimized.
(2) SetiGate User Account Options
- OPEN SetiGate
- CLICK on the top menu EDIT > ADD USER... (or edit, if this was already done once)
- On this ACCOUNT window, CHANGE the options like the image below.
What you can change:
- Use the same email address USED ON YOUR SETI@HOME ACCOUNT.
- The "Max. cache size" is the number of work units (WU) you want to hold in your hard drive. Remember that each WU is of about 314Kb in size, and many work units will take some time to download. You can go to the top menu EDIT > EDIT USER... to change this number at ANY TIME, if you want to stop downloading WU, for example.
(3) Seti@Home Options
- OPEN Seti@Home
- CLICK on the top menu SETTINGS > PREFERENCES...
- On the preferences window, CHANGE the options like the image below.
- AFTER this, CLICK on the "Proxy Server..." button on the same window.
What you can change:
- You should also turn on the "Data analysis always run" mode if you have a average or more than average computer.
(4) Seti@Home HTTP Proxy Setup
- AFTER CLICKING on the "Proxy Server..." button, a new window comes up.
- On this new window, CHANGE the options like the image below.
- Then CLICK OK.
Congratulations! Your Seti@Home screen-saver will now use the Work Units that SetiGate will hold. This means that now you have to go to the internet and start downloading Work Units right?
(5) Go online and get those Work Units!
- Connect the PC to the Internet
- OPEN SetiGate
- CLICK on the top menu CONNECT > SEND/RECEIVE ALL...
- SetiGate will now download the number of WU chosen in the STEP (2) of THIS TUTORIAL.
- Remember from time to time to repeat this last step, when all or some of the WU are already DONE on the SetiGate list. That will depend on the speed of your CPU.
